Sunan Abi Dawud 2280 (Book 13, Hadith 106) #22571
Treating Maternal Aunts Like Mothers

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the maternal aunt is like a mother and should be treated as such.

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: When we came out from Mecca, Hamzah's daughter pursued us crying: My uncle. Ali lifted her and took her by the hand. (Addressing Fatimah he said:) Take your uncle's daughter. She then lifted her. The narrator then transmitted the rest of the tradition. Ja'far said: She is my uncle's daughter. Her maternal aunt is my wife. The Prophet decided in favour of her maternal aunt, and said: The maternal aunt is like mother.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect to your family members, especially those related through marriage such as your maternal aunts or uncles. Treat them with love and kindness just like you would treat any other member of your immediate family.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about the importance of respecting our family members. It was narrated by Ali ibn AbuTalib who was travelling with his family when they were approached by Hamzah's daughter. She was crying for her uncle and Ali took her in his arms and asked Fatimah to take care of her as well. The Prophet then declared that the maternal aunt is like a mother and should be treated with respect just like one would treat their own mother. This hadith teaches us to show respect to our family members, especially those related through marriage such as our maternal aunts or uncles. We must remember that they are part of our extended family and should be treated with love and kindness just like we would treat any other member of our immediate family.
