Sunan Abi Dawud 2201 (Book 13, Hadith 27) #22492
Intention Determines Reward

SUMMARY: Actions are judged by intentions and a person will only receive the reward for what they intended. Emigration is to Allah and His Messenger, or to a worldly end or to marry someone.

'Umar bin Al Khattab reported the Apostle of Allaah as saying "Actions are to be judged only by intentions and a man will have only what he intended. When one’s emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle, his emigration is to Allaah and His Apostle but his emigration is to a worldly end at which he aims or to a woman whom he marries , his emigration is to that for which he emigrated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Have good intentions when performing any action

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that actions are judged based on intentions. A person will only receive the reward for what they intended when doing an action. For example, if someone emigrates, their intention must be for Allah and His Messenger in order to receive the reward from Allah. If their intention is something else such as a worldly end or marriage then that is what they will be rewarded for instead. This teaches us that we should always have good intentions when doing any action so we can get the best rewards from Allah.
