Exercising Choice in Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ allowed a woman to exercise her choice in marriage, even if her father had married her against her will.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A virgin came to the Prophet and mentioned that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet allowed her to exercise her choice.

QUICK LESSONS:
Exercise your right to choose what you want for yourself; Respect other people's choices; Seek consent before making any major decisions about someone else's life; Respect women's rights and autonomy over their lives; Listen carefully when someone expresses their opinion or wishes regarding something important like marriage.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of consent when it comes to marriage. It tells us that even if a woman's father has married her off against her will, she still has the right to choose whether or not she wants to go through with the marriage. This is an important lesson for all people as it emphasizes that no one should be forced into a situation they do not want and that everyone should have the right to make their own decisions about their life. It also shows us how much respect and care the Prophet (ﷺ) had for women and their rights.
