Sunan Abi Dawud 1672 (Book 9, Hadith 117) #21964
Recompensing Kindness

SUMMARY: If someone seeks protection, grant it; if someone begs, give something; if someone invites you, accept it; and if someone does you a kindness, repay them in some way.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet said: If anyone seeks protection in Allah's name, grant him protection; if anyone begs in Allah's name, give him something; if anyone gives you an invitation, accept it; and if anyone does you a kindness, recompense him; but if you have not the means to do so, pray for him until you feel that you have compensated him.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being kind to others and repaying kindness when it is done to us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that we should protect those who seek our protection, give something to those who beg from us in Allah's name, accept invitations from people and recompense those who do us a kindness. Even if we don't have the means to repay them with money or goods, we can still pray for them until we feel that they have been compensated. This hadith teaches us the importance of being generous and kind towards others as well as recognizing when people are kind to us so that we can show our appreciation in return.
