Sunan Abi Dawud 1650 (Book 9, Hadith 95) #21942
Charity and Permission

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to take charity from people without the permission of the Prophet.

Narrated AbuRafi': The Prophet sent a man of the Banu Makhzum to collect sadaqah. He said to AbuRafi': Accompany me so that you may get some of it. He said: (I cannot take it) until I go to the Prophet and ask him. Then he went to him and asked him. He said: The sadaqah is not lawful for us, and the client of a people is treated as one of them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek permission before taking anything from someone else

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about charity and permission. It is narrated by AbuRafi' that the Prophet sent a man of the Banu Makhzum to collect sadaqah, which means charity or alms. He asked AbuRafi' to accompany him so that he could get some of it, but AbuRafi' refused until he went to ask for permission from the Prophet first. The Prophet then said that it was not lawful for them to take charity without his permission. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about taking things from other people without their consent or approval, especially when it comes to money or other valuable items. We should always seek permission before taking anything from someone else, even if we think they would be willing to give it away freely.
