Prescribed Zakat During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad prescribed a Zakat to be paid by Muslims at the end of Ramadan, which was either one sa of dried dates or one sa of barley.

Ibn 'Umar said : The Messenger of Allah prescribed as zakat payable by slave and freeman, male and female, among the muslims on closing the fast of Ramadan one sa of dried dates or one sa’ of barley. (This tradition was read out byu 'Abd Allah b. Maslamah to Malik)
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، - وَقَرَأَهُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ أَيْضًا - عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَرَضَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ - قَالَ فِيهِ فِيمَا قَرَأَهُ عَلَىَّ مَالِكٌ - زَكَاةُ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ صَاعٌ مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعٌ مِنْ شَعِيرٍ عَلَى كُلِّ حُرٍّ أَوْ عَبْدٍ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad prescribing a zakat to be paid by Muslims at the end of Ramadan. A zakat is an obligatory charity that is given to those in need and it is considered an act of worship in Islam. The amount prescribed was either one sa’a, which is equivalent to four mudds, or two kilograms and five hundred grams, of dried dates or one sa’a of barley. This hadith teaches us that we should give charity out of our own wealth and that we should help those who are less fortunate than us. It also shows us how important it is for us to follow the teachings and guidance given by Prophet Muhammad as he was sent as a mercy for all mankind.
