Sunan Abi Dawud 1364 (Book 5, Hadith 115) #21656
The Prophet Muhammad's Night Prayer Routine

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's prayer routine during the night, and how he would wake up to pray.

The client of Ibn 'Abbas said that he asked him: How would the Messenger of Allah pray during the night ? He replied: I spent a night with him when he was with Maimunah. He slept and awoke when half the night or one-third of it had passed. He stood up and went to a leather bad containing water. He performed ablution and I also performed ablution with him. He then stood up and I also stood at his left side. He made me stand at his right side. He then put his hand upon my head, as he was touching my ear and awakening me. He then prayed two light rak'ahs and recited Surah al-Fatihah in each of them, and uttered the salutation. He then prayed eleven rak'ahs observing the witr and slept. Then Bilal came to him and said: Prayer, Messenger of Allah. He got up and prayed two rak'ahs, and then led the people in the prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith describes the prayer routine of Prophet Muhammad during the night. It is narrated by a client of Ibn 'Abbas that he asked him how the Messenger of Allah prayed at night. He replied that he spent a night with him when he was with Maimunah and saw him sleep and then wake up after half or one-third of the night passed. He then went to a leather bag containing water and performed ablution before standing on his left side while making him stand on his right side. He put his hand upon his head as if touching his ear in order to awaken him before praying two light rak'ahs reciting Surah al-Fatihah in each one followed by eleven rak'ahs observing witr before sleeping again until Bilal came to call for prayer whereupon he got up and prayed two more rak'ahs leading people in prayer afterwards. This hadith teaches us about dedication towards worshiping Allah through prayers even during late hours at night as well as being mindful of others around us by awakening them for prayers too if needed. It also emphasizes on reciting Surah al-Fatihah in every rak’aah which is an important part of our daily prayers according to Islamic teachings.
