Praying Two Rak'ahs Before Noon Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always prayed two rak'ahs before offering the noon prayer.

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah on eighteen journeys and I never saw him fail to pray two rak'ahs when the sun had passed the meridian before offering the noon prayer.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُسْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ سَفَرًا فَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ تَرَكَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ إِذَا زَاغَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Al-Bara’ ibn Azib states that the Prophet Muhammad always prayed two rak'ahs before offering the noon prayer. This is a practice known as salatul duha or supererogatory prayer which is performed after sunrise and before midday. It is a voluntary act of worship that Muslims can perform to gain extra rewards from Allah. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to do good deeds even if they are not obligatory upon us and it also encourages us to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad who was an example for all of mankind.
