Sunan Abi Dawud 1113 (Book 2, Hadith 724) #21405
The Benefits of Attending Friday Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that attending Friday prayer can be beneficial for one's spiritual growth and atonement of sins.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet said: Three types of people attend Friday prayer; One is present in a frivolous way and that is all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allah may grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is present silently and quietly with-out stepping over a Muslim or annoying anyone, and that is an atonement for his sins till the next Friday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, the Exalted, says: "He who does a good deed will have ten times as much" (vi.160).

TOPICS

QUICK LESSONS:
Attend Jumu’ah prayers regularly with sincerity and respectfulness towards fellow worshippers. Come with supplications hoping they will be granted by God Almighty. Be silent during prayer so you don't disturb others around you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As explains the benefits of attending Jumu'ah or Friday prayers. It states that there are three types of people who attend this prayer - those who are present frivolously without any intention to benefit spiritually from it; those who come with supplications to God hoping their requests will be granted; and those who come silently without disturbing others which can serve as an atonement for their sins until the next week. This idea is supported by verse 6:160 in Quran which states “He who does a good deed will have ten times as much”. Thus this hadith encourages Muslims to attend Jumu'ah prayers not only out of obligation but also to reap its spiritual rewards such as forgiveness for their sins.
