Sunan Abi Dawud 1007 (Book 2, Hadith 618) #21299
The Importance of Intervals Between Prayers

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of having an interval between prayers and how Umar reminded a man of this by shaking him.

Narrated Al-Azraq ibn Qays: An imam of ours, whose kunyah (surname) was AbuRimthah, led us in prayer and said: I prayed this prayer, or one like it, with the Prophet . AbuBakr and Umar were standing in the front row on his right and there was a man who had been present at the first takbir in the prayer. The Prophet of Allah offered the prayer, then gave the salutation to his right and his left so that we saw the whiteness of his cheeks, then turned away as AbuRimthah (meaning himself) had done. The man who has been present with him at the first takbir in the prayer then got up to pray another prayer, whereupon Umar leaped up and, seizing him by the shoulders, shook him and said: Sit down, for the People of the Book perished for no other reason than that there was no interval between their prayers. The Prophet raised his eyes and said: Allah has made you say what is right, son of al-Khattab. Abu Dawud said: Sometimes the name of Abu Umayyah is narrated instead of Abu Rimthah.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of having an interval between prayers. It is narrated by Al-Azraq ibn Qays that an imam named Abu Rimthah led them in prayer and said he prayed a similar prayer with the Prophet ﷺ. During this prayer, it was observed that both Abu Bakr and Umar were standing in the front row on his right side. There was also a man who was present at the first takbir in the prayer. After completing his prayer, Prophet ﷺ gave salutations to his right and left so that everyone could see his cheeks clearly before turning away as did Imam Abu Rimthah. However, after this man got up to pray another prayer without any interval between them, Umar leaped up and shook him while saying “Sit down for People of Book perished due to no intervals between their prayers” upon which Prophet ﷺ praised him for speaking truthfully. This hadith teaches us that we should always have an interval between our prayers as it is important for our faith according to Islam teachings.
