The Prophet's Love for His Granddaughter

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was seen leading the people in prayer with his granddaughter Umamah on his shoulder, and when he prostrated, he put her down.

Abu Qatadah al-Ansari said: I saw the Messenger of Allah leading the people in prayer with Umamah daughter of Abu al-As on his neck (shoulder). When he prostrated, he put her down. Abu Dawud said: The narrator Makhramah did not hear from his father except one tradition.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ مَخْرَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ، يَقُولُ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يُصَلِّي لِلنَّاسِ وَأُمَامَةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ عَلَى عُنُقِهِ فَإِذَا سَجَدَ وَضَعَهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَلَمْ يَسْمَعْ مَخْرَمَةُ مِنْ أَبِيهِ إِلاَّ حَدِيثًا وَاحِدًا

This hadith speaks to the love that the Prophet Muhammad had for his granddaughter Umamah. He was seen leading the people in prayer with her on his shoulder, and when it came time to prostrate, he put her down. This shows us how much love and care he had for her as a grandparent. It also teaches us that we should show our children love and care as well. We should be patient with them even if they are disruptive or mischievous at times because they are still learning about life. We can learn from this hadith that we should strive to be like the Prophet Muhammad in our relationships with our own children or grandchildren by showing them kindness and compassion no matter what their age is.
