Sunan Abi Dawud 783 (Book 2, Hadith 393) #21074
Proper Way of Performing Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the proper way of performing prayer according to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

'A’ishah said: The Messenger of Allah began prayer with the takbir (Allah is most great) and with reciting "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe". And when he bowed, he neither raised up nor lowered down his head, but kept it between the two (conditions). And when he raised his head after bowing, he did not prostrate himself until he stood up straight; and when he raised his head after prostration, he did not prostrate (the second time) until he sat down properly; and he recited al-tahiyyat after every pair of rak’ahs; and when he sat, he spread out his left foot and raised his right. He forbade to sit like the sitting of the devil, and to spread out to hands (on the ground in prostration) like animals. He used to finish prayer with uttering the salutation.

QUICK LESSONS:
Say “Allahu Akbar” at beginning; recite “Praise be to Allah, Lord of Universe”; keep head between two conditions while bowing; stand up straight before prostrating; sit properly before second prostration; recite al-tahiyyat after every pair of rak'ahs ; spread left foot and raise right one while sitting ; utter salutation at end .

EXPLANATIONS:
Prayer is an important part of a Muslim's life. It is a way for them to connect with Allah and thank Him for all His blessings. According to this hadith, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us the proper way of performing prayer. He began by saying "Allahu Akbar" or "Allah is most great". Then he recited "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe". When bowing down in ruku', he kept his head between two conditions - neither raising it up nor lowering it down. After bowing, he did not prostrate himself until standing up straight again and when raising his head after prostration, he did not prostrate again until sitting properly. He also recited al-tahiyyat after every pair of rak’ahs and when sitting, spread out his left foot and raised his right one. He forbade sitting like how Satan sits as well as spreading out hands on the ground in prostration like animals do. Lastly, he finished prayer with uttering salutation or taslimaat.
