Sunan Abi Dawud 739 (Book 2, Hadith 349) #21030
The Prayer of Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prayer of Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr and how it was similar to the prayer of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Maymun al-Makki said: that he saw Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr leading in prayer. He pointed with his hands (ie raised his hands opposite to the shoulders) when he stood up, when he bowed and when he prostrated, and when he got up after prostration, he pointed with his hands (ie raised his hands). The I went to Ibn Abbas and said (to him) I saw Ibn az-Zubayr praying that I never saw anyone praying. I then told him about the pointing with his hands (raising his hands). He said: If you like to see the prayer of the Messenger of Allah follower the prayer as offered by Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prayer of one of Prophet Muhammad's companions, Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr. It was narrated by two people, namely, Abdullah ibn Abbas and Maymun al Makki. According to this hadith, when praying, Ibn Zubair would raise his hands opposite his shoulders when standing up for prayer, bowing down in ruku', prostrating in sujood and raising his hands again after sujood. When asked about this practice, Ibn Abbas said that if someone wanted to follow the example set by Prophet Muhammad then they should follow the way that Ibn Zubair prayed. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to pray as close as possible to how Prophet Muhammad prayed so that we can gain maximum reward from Allah SWT for our prayers.
