Sunan Abi Dawud 543 (Book 2, Hadith 153) #20834
The Importance of Joining Prayer Rows

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of joining the prayer row and standing for a long time before the Imam pronounces Takbir.

'Awn b. Kahmas reported on the authority of his father Kahmas : we stood for praying at Mina when the Imam had not come out. Some of us sat down (and I too). An old man from Kufah said to me: Why did you down? I said : Ibn Buraidah, this is Sumud (ie, waiting for the Imam in the standing condition). The old man then narrated a tradition from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Awsaja on the authority of al-Bara’ b'.Azib: We would stand in rows during the time of the Messenger of Allah for a long time before he pronounced Takbir. He further said; Allah, the Exalted and Mighty, sends blessings and the angles invoke blessings for those who are nearer to the front rows. No step is more liking to Allah than a step which one takes to join the row (of the prayer).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes on joining prayer rows and standing for a long time before Imam pronounces Takbir. It teaches us that Allah sends blessings to those who are nearer to front rows and that taking steps to join prayer row is more pleasing to Allah than any other step we take in our lives. It also tells us that angels invoke blessings for those who are in front rows which shows how important it is to join them as soon as possible so one can receive these blessings from Allah and His angels. Furthermore, this hadith also encourages us not to sit down while waiting for Imam but rather stand in anticipation with patience until he arrives and starts leading prayers.
