Sahih al-Bukhari 2164 (Book 34, Hadith 115) #2078
Buying Animals and Meeting Owners of Goods

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to meet the owners of goods on the way away from the market and if someone buys an animal which has been kept unmilked for a long time, they can return it but must pay a Sa of dates along with it.

Narrated 'Abdullah: Whoever buys an animal which has been kept unmilked for a long time, could return it, but has to pay a Sa of dates along with it. And the Prophet forbade meeting the owners of goods on the way away from the market.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest in your dealings and transactions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when buying an animal, one should not meet its owner away from the market. If someone buys an animal which has been kept unmilked for a long time, they can return it but must pay a Sa of dates along with it. A sa is a unit of measurement used in Arabia during Prophet Muhammad's time and is equivalent to four mudds or two kilograms. The Prophet Muhammad also forbade meeting owners of goods on the way away from the market as this could lead to unfair practices such as bribery or fraud. This hadith encourages us to be honest in our dealings and transactions so that we may be rewarded by Allah SWT in this life and hereafter.
