The Prophet's Advice on Umm Habibah's Flow of Blood

SUMMARY: Umm Habibah had a flow of blood for seven years and the Prophet advised her to take a bath and pray.

'Aishah, wife of Prophet , said: Umm Habibah, daughter of Jahsh, sister-in-law of Messenger of Allah and wife of 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, had a flow of blood for seven years. She asked the Messenger of Allah about it. The Messenger of Allah said: This is not menstruation but only vein; so you should take a bath and pray'.Aishah said: She used to take bath in a wash-tub in the apartment of her sister Zainab daughter of Jahsh ; the redness of (her) blood dominated the water.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَقِيلٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِيُّ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَعَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ خَتَنَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَتَحْتَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ اسْتُحِيضَتْ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ فَاسْتَفْتَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ هَذِهِ لَيْسَتْ بِالْحَيْضَةِ وَلَكِنْ هَذَا عِرْقٌ فَاغْتَسِلِي وَصَلِّي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَكَانَتْ تَغْتَسِلُ فِي مِرْكَنٍ فِي حُجْرَةِ أُخْتِهَا زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ حَتَّى تَعْلُوَ حُمْرَةُ الدَّمِ الْمَاءَ

EXPLANATIONS:
Umm Habibah was the sister-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and she had been suffering from a flow of blood for seven years. When she asked the Prophet about it, he told her that it was not menstruation but only vein and advised her to take a bath and pray. She used to take baths in wash tubs in her sister Zainab’s apartment as the redness of her blood dominated the water. This hadith teaches us that we should always seek advice from religious scholars when we are facing any kind of difficulty or confusion regarding our faith or religion. It also teaches us that even if something is difficult or embarrassing to talk about, we should still ask questions so that we can get proper guidance from those who know better than us.
