Sunan Abi Dawud 164 (Book 1, Hadith 164) #20455
Wiping Over Shoes and Feet in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) wiped over the upper part of his shoes and 'Ali washed the upper part of his feet, showing that religion is not based on opinion.

A 'mash transmitted this tradition saying: If religion were based on opinion, it would be more proper to wipe the under part of the feet than the upper. The Prophet wiped over the upper part of his shoes. The narrator Waki’ said: I saw ' Ali perform ablution and wash the upper part of his feet, and say : Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah doing like this –and he narrated the tradition in full.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious teachings rather than relying solely on personal opinion ; Respect for religious leaders ; Adhere to rules and regulations related to faith .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith shows us that religion is not based on opinion. It was narrated by A'mash who said that if religion were based on opinion it would be more proper to wipe the under part of the feet than the upper. However, The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wiped over the upper part of his shoes and 'Ali washed the upper part of his feet. This shows us that we should follow what has been taught to us by our religious leaders rather than relying solely on our own opinions when it comes to matters related to faith. We should also remember that even though opinions may differ from person to person, there are certain rules and regulations which must be followed in order for one's faith to remain valid.
