The Power of Ablution and Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of performing ablution and prayer in order to be forgiven for one's past sins.

Humran b. Abban, the freed slave of 'Uthman, said : I saw ' Uthman’ b. 'Affan while he performed ablution. He poured water over his hands three times and then washed them. He then rinsed his mouth and then cleansed his nose with water (three times). He then washed his right arm up to the elbow three times, then washed his left arm in a similar manner; then wiped his head; then washed his right foot three times, then washed his left foot in a similar manner, and then said : I saw the Messenger of Allah performing ablution like this ablution of mine. Then he (the Prophet) said: He who performs ablution like this ablution of mine and then offered two rakhats of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, Allah will pardon all his past sins.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the power of ablution and prayer in order to be forgiven for one's past sins. It is narrated by Humran b. Abban, the freed slave of 'Uthman, who saw Uthman perform ablution in a certain way that was similar to how Prophet Muhammad performed it. Uthman poured water over his hands three times and then washed them before rinsing his mouth and cleansing his nose with water three times as well. He then washed each arm up to the elbow three times before wiping his head, followed by washing each foot three times too. After this process was completed, Prophet Muhammad said that whoever performs an ablution like this one and offers two rakats of prayer without allowing their thoughts to be distracted will have all their past sins pardoned by Allah. This hadith teaches us about the importance of performing wudu properly before praying as it is a sign of cleanliness both physically and spiritually which can lead us closer towards Allah’s mercy if done with sincerity. It also reminds us that we should focus on our prayers so that our minds are not distracted from its true purpose which is connecting with Allah through worshiping Him alone without any other thoughts or intentions getting in between us and Him during this time period we dedicate solely for Him every day or night depending on when we choose to pray salat at home or at a mosque respectively .
