Sunan Abi Dawud 75 (Book 1, Hadith 75) #20366
Kindness to Cats

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on cats and how they should be treated with kindness.

Narrated AbuQatadah: Kabshah, daughter of Ka'b ibn Malik and wife of Ibn AbuQatadah, reported: AbuQatadah visited (me) and I poured out water for him for ablution. A cat came and drank some of it and he tilted the vessel for it until it drank some of it. Kabshah said: He saw me looking at him; he asked me: Are you surprised, my niece? I said: Yes. He then reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: It is not unclean; it is one of those (males or females) who go round among you.

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad teaches us about kindness towards animals, specifically cats. He was visiting Kabshah when a cat came to drink some water from her vessel for ablution. Instead of scaring it away or getting angry at it, he tilted the vessel so that it could drink some water as well. When Kabshah expressed her surprise at his actions, he explained that cats are not unclean creatures and should be treated with kindness like any other creature in our midst. This hadith teaches us to show compassion towards all living things regardless of their size or species and reminds us that Allah loves those who are kind to His creations.
