Abstaining from Intoxicants

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) sent two people to Yemen and advised them not to drink any intoxicants.

It was narrated from Abu Burdah that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW sent Mu'adh and me to Yemen. Mu'adh said: 'You are sending us to a land where the people have many kinds of drinks. What should I drink?' He said: 'Drink, but do not drink any intoxicant'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings even when travelling abroad; Be mindful of what one consumes; Abstain from consuming intoxicants .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) sent two of his companions, Mu'adh and Abu Burdah's father, to Yemen on a mission. When they were about to leave, Mu'adh asked the Prophet what he should drink in the land of Yemen as there were many kinds of drinks available there. The Prophet replied that he could drink but should not consume any intoxicants. This hadith teaches us that we should abstain from consuming intoxicants as it is prohibited in Islam and can lead us astray from our faith. We must also be mindful of what we consume as it can have an effect on our physical health as well as our spiritual wellbeing.
