Wearing Silver Rings

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) advised a man to wear silver rings, but not one that is too expensive.

'Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated from his father that: A man came to the Prophet SAW and he was wearing an iron ring. He said: "Why do I see you wearing the jewelry of the people of Hell?" He threw it away, then he came and he was wearing a brass ring. He said: "Why do I notice the stench of idols from you?" So he threw it away, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what should I use?" He said: "Silver, but it should not equal a Mithqal".

QUICK LESSONS:
Wear silver jewelry in moderation and avoid anything associated with idol worshiping such as brass rings .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's advice to a man who was wearing an iron and brass ring. The Prophet told him that he should wear silver rings instead, but not one that is too expensive or equal to a mithqal. A mithqal is an ancient unit of weight used in the Middle East and North Africa which was equivalent to 4.25 grams of gold or 4.25 grams of silver. This hadith teaches us the importance of moderation when it comes to spending money on jewelry and other items, as well as avoiding anything associated with idol worshiping such as brass rings which were commonly used by pagans at the time of the Prophet Muhammad's mission in Arabia.
