Fairness in Business Transactions

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us to not take advantage of others in business transactions and to be fair when trading.

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that: some dates from trees that were irrigated artificially were brought to the Messenger of Allah and the dates of the messenger of Allah were dates from trees that were nourished by their roots. He said: "Where did you get these from?" They said: "We bought a Sa of them for two Sa s of our dates: He said: "Do not do that, for this is not right. Rather sell your dates and but what you need of these,"

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest and just when trading with others; Pay a fair price for goods/services; Do not take advantage of someone else's misfortune or lack of knowledge; Respect other people's property rights; Treat everyone fairly regardless if you know them personally or not.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of fairness in business transactions. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was presented with dates from trees that were irrigated artificially and he asked where they got them from. They said they bought a Sa for two Sa s of their own dates. He then told them not to do that as it was not right and instead suggested that they sell their own dates and buy what they need with the money earned from it. This teaches us that we should always be fair when trading or doing any kind of business transaction with someone else; we should never take advantage of someone else's misfortune or lack of knowledge for our own benefit. We should also make sure to pay a fair price for goods or services so as not to exploit anyone financially or otherwise.
