The Consequences of Keeping Dogs

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog, except for hunting or herding livestock, will result in a deduction of two Qirats from one's reward each day.

It was narrated that Ibn'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'whoever keeps a dog, two Qirats will be detracted from his reward each day, except a trained hunting dog, or a dog for herding livestock".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before deciding whether or not you should keep a pet; consider how your actions can affect your rewards in the hereafter; understand when keeping animals as pets may be permissible and when it may not be permissible according to Islamic teachings .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping dogs as pets. According to the Prophet Muhammad, if someone keeps a dog as a pet, they will have two Qirats deducted from their reward each day. A Qirat is an amount that is difficult to measure and it is used to refer to something that has great value. However, this does not apply if the dog is used for hunting or herding livestock. In this case, keeping the dog would be permissible and no deductions would be made from one's reward. This hadith teaches us that we should think carefully before deciding whether or not we should keep a pet because it can have an effect on our rewards in the hereafter.
