Killing for Personal Glory

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the consequences of killing someone for personal glory, and that the burden of sin will be upon the killer.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud that: The Prophet SAW said: "A man will come, holding another man's hand, and will say: 'O Lord, this man killed me'. Allah will say to him: 'Why did you kill him?' He will say: 'I killed him so that the glory would be to you'. He will say: 'It is to Me'. Then (another) man will come holding another man's hand, and will say: 'This man killed me'. Allah will say to him: 'Why did you kill him?' He will say: 'So that the glory would be to so and so'. He will say: 'It is not to so and so,' and the burden of sin will be upon him".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the consequences of killing someone for personal glory. It was narrated by 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud that Prophet Muhammad said a man will come holding another man's hand, and say to Allah that he killed him so that the glory would be to Him. Allah will then respond saying it is not to Him, and instead, the burden of sin will be upon him. This hadith teaches us that we should not kill anyone in order to gain fame or recognition as this is a major sin in Islam and one must bear its consequences alone. We should also remember that all glory belongs only to Allah and no one else.
