Vows and Disobedience

SUMMARY: Making a vow to do something that is not in one's control or power is not permissible.

It was narrated from 'Imran bin Husain that the Prophet said: "There is no vow to commit an act of disobedience, and no vow concerning that which the son of Adam does not possess".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَيُّوبُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ نَذْرَ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللَّهِ وَلاَ فِيمَا لاَ يَمْلِكُ ابْنُ آدَمَ

This hadith explains that it is not permissible to make a vow or pledge to do something unlawful, as this would be considered an act of disobedience. It also explains that it is not permissible to make a vow concerning something which one does not have control over or power over, as this would be futile. This hadith teaches us the importance of being mindful of our words and actions, and reminds us that we should only make promises for things which are within our control and power. We should also strive to stay away from any form of disobedience towards Allah SWT.
