Fulfilling Vows After Death

SUMMARY: The Prophet advised Sa'd bin 'Ubadah to fulfill a vow his mother had made before her death.

It was narrated from Sa'd bin 'Ubadah that he consulted the Prophet about a vow which his mother had to fulfill, but she died before doing so. The Messenger of Allah said: "Fulfill it on her behalf".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ أَبُو يُوسُفَ الصَّيْدَلاَنِيُّ، عَنْ عِيسَى، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ يُونُسَ - عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، أَنَّهُ اسْتَفْتَى النَّبِيَّ فِي نَذْرٍ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّهِ فَتُوُفِّيَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ اقْضِهِ عَنْهَا

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of fulfilling vows even after the death of a person who made them. It was narrated from Sa'd bin 'Ubadah that he consulted the Prophet about a vow which his mother had to fulfill, but she died before doing so. The Messenger of Allah said that it should be fulfilled on her behalf. This shows us that we should take our promises and commitments seriously, even if they are not our own, and strive to fulfill them in order to honor those who have passed away. We can also learn from this hadith that we should always strive to keep our word and be honest in all our dealings with others, as this is an important part of being a good Muslim.
