Forgiveness for Unspoken Thoughts

SUMMARY: Allah has forgiven the mistakes of Muslims as long as they are not spoken or acted upon.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "Allah, the Most High, has forgiven my Ummah for whatever enters the mind, so long as it is not spoken of or put into action".
أَخْبَرَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْجُعْفِيُّ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ شَيْبَانَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى تَجَاوَزَ لأُمَّتِي عَمَّا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا مَا لَمْ تَكَلَّمْ أَوْ تَعْمَلْ بِهِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mercy and forgiveness of Allah. It teaches us that even if we have thoughts that are wrong, Allah will forgive us so long as we do not speak or act on them. This hadith reminds us to be mindful of our thoughts and to control our tongues from speaking ill words. We should also strive to do good deeds in order to gain the pleasure of Allah and His forgiveness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that it is important to think before we speak, because whatever enters our minds can be forgiven by Allah if it is not said out loud or acted upon.
