Divorcing Women Before 'Iddah Elapses

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when divorcing women, it should be done before their 'Iddah elapses.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: "O Prophet! When you divorce women, divorce them at their 'Iddah (prescribed periods)". Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Before their 'Iddah elapses".
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُجَاهِدًا، يُحَدِّثُهُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ‏{‏ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِذَا طَلَّقْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَطَلِّقُوهُنَّ لِعِدَّتِهِنَّ ‏}‏ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رضى الله عنه قُبُلِ عِدَّتِهِنَّ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of divorcing women at the right time. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, concerning the saying of Allah in the Quran that when a man divorces his wife he should do so during her prescribed period or ‘Iddah. The ‘Iddah is a period of waiting for divorced women to ensure that they are not pregnant and to give them time to adjust to their new situation. According to this hadith, it is important for men who are getting divorced from their wives to do so before their ‘Iddah elapses in order for them to have enough time and space for themselves after the divorce has been finalized.
