Sunan an-Nasai 3353 (Book 26, Hadith 158) #17965
Dowries and Gifts in Marriage

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that whatever is given as a dowry, gift or promised before marriage belongs to the bride, and whatever is given after marriage belongs to the one it was given to.

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Amr: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whatever is given as a dowry, or gift or is promised her before the marriage belongs to her. Whatever is given after the marriage belongs to the one to whom it was given. And the most deserving for which a (man) is to be honored is (when marrying off) his daughter or sister'." This is the wording of 'Abdullah (one of the narrators).
