Dowry in Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad asked 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf about the dowry he gave to his wife and was pleased with the amount.

'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said: "The Messenger of Allah saw me looking cheerful as I had just got married". I said: "I have gotten married to a woman of the Ansar". He said: "How much did you give her as a dowry?" He said: "A Nawah (five Dirhams) of gold".
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا، يَقُولُ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَعَلَىَّ بَشَاشَةُ الْعُرْسِ فَقُلْتُ تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ كَمْ أَصْدَقْتَهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ زِنَةَ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ

This hadith is about marriage and dowries. The Prophet Muhammad asked 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf how much he had given as a dowry to his wife from the Ansar tribe.
