Sunan an-Nasai 3313 (Book 26, Hadith 118) #17925
Rights of Breast-Fed Relatives

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that a person who is related to someone through breast-feeding is considered as a relative and has the same rights as those related by birth.

It was narrated from 'Amrah that 'Aishah told her that the Messenger of Allah was with her, and she heard a man asking permission to enter Hafsah's house'.Aishah said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is a man asking permission to enter your house'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'I think it is so-and-so the paternal uncle of Hafsah through breast-feeding'. 'Aishah said: If so-and-so (her own paternal uncle through breast-feeding) were alive, would he be allowed to enter upon me?' The Messenger of Allah said: 'What becomes unlawful (for marriage) through breast-feeding is that which becomes unlawful through birth'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the importance of recognizing relatives through breast feeding. It was narrated from 'Amrah that 'Aishah told her that the Messenger of Allah was with her when she heard a man asking permission to enter Hafsah's house. When Aishah asked if it was so and so, the paternal uncle of Hafsah through breast feeding, the Prophet replied in affirmative. Aishah then asked if her own paternal uncle would be allowed to enter upon her if he were alive and the Prophet said yes because what becomes unlawful for marriage due to birth also applies for those related by breastfeeding. This hadith teaches us that we should not differentiate between relatives based on how they are related but rather treat them all equally regardless of whether they are related by birth or breastfeeding.
