Marriage and Fasting for Chastity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised young men to get married if they can afford it, as it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity. If they cannot, then he should fast instead.

Narrated 'Abdullah: It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah said to us: 'O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity, and whoever cannot then he should fast, for it will be a restraint (Wija) for him'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Get married if you can afford it; Fast if you cannot; Lower your gaze; Guard your chastity; Abstain from haram activities; Strive to protect your faith by controlling your desires

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised young men to get married if they can afford it, as marriage is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity than fasting. Lowering the gaze means avoiding looking at things that are not permissible or appropriate according to Islamic teachings. Guarding chastity means avoiding any kind of sexual activity outside of marriage. If a person cannot afford to get married, then he should fast instead as this will help him restrain himself from doing anything inappropriate or haram. This hadith teaches us that we must strive to protect our faith by controlling our desires and abstaining from anything that goes against Islamic teachings.
