Sahih al-Bukhari 1846 (Book 28, Hadith 26) #1769
Taking Refuge in the Ka'ba

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded to kill a person who was taking refuge in the Ka'ba.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Messenger entered Mecca in the year of its Conquest wearing an Arabian helmet on his head and when the Prophet took it off, a person came and said, "Ibn Khatal is holding the covering of the Ka'ba (taking refuge in the Ka'ba)". The Prophet said, "Kill him".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect places of worship by using them only for prayer and worship purposes instead of seeking protection from harm or punishment there.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's command to kill a person who was taking refuge in the Ka’aba. The Prophet Muhammad entered Mecca during its conquest wearing an Arabian helmet and when he took it off, someone informed him that Ibn Khatal was holding onto the covering of the Ka’aba for protection. In response, he commanded that Ibn Khatal be killed. This hadith teaches us that we should not take refuge in places of worship as they are meant for prayer and worship only and not for protection from harm or punishment. It also teaches us that justice must be served no matter where one is located or what one believes in; if someone has committed a crime, they must face consequences regardless of their location or beliefs.
