Sunan an-Nasai 2608 (Book 23, Hadith 174) #17219
Contentment and Gratitude

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being content with what one has and not wishing for more than what one needs.

'Abdullah bin Umar said: "I heard 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, say: The Prophet used to give me payment and I would say: Give it to someone who is more, in need of it than I am, until one day he gave me some money and I said to him: Give it to someone who is more in need of it than I am. He said: Take it and keep it or give it in charity. Whatever comes to you of this wealth when you are not hoping for it and not asking for it, take it, and whatever does not, then do not wish for it"'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of contentment and gratitude in life. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Umar who heard it from Umar ibn al Khattab. The Prophet Muhammad was giving money to Umar when he suggested that it be given to someone else who needed it more than him. The Prophet then said that whatever comes to you without asking or expecting should be taken but whatever does not come should not be wished for. This teaches us that we should always be grateful for what we have and never wish for more than we need or can handle. We should also remember that Allah will provide us with all our needs if we are patient and trust in Him.
