The Intention of Fasting

SUMMARY: Fasting should only be done if the intention to fast was made before dawn.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that he used to say: "None should fast except the one who intended to fast before dawn".

QUICK LESSONS:
Have an intention before fasting

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting, which is an important part of Islamic practice. It teaches us that when we decide to fast, we must make the intention to do so before dawn. This means that we must make a conscious decision and have a clear purpose in mind for why we are fasting. We cannot just randomly decide to fast without any thought or purpose behind it. The hadith also emphasizes the importance of having an intention and being mindful of our actions in general, as this can help us stay focused on our goals and ensure that our actions are meaningful and beneficial.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that intentions are very important in Islam, as they can help guide our decisions and actions towards what is right and beneficial for ourselves and others around us. He also taught us that it is important to be mindful of our intentions when performing any action or deed, as this will ensure that whatever we do has meaning behind it rather than just being done out of habit or routine.
