Reciting the Quran Sitting and Standing

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite the Quran while sitting, and when he wanted to bow, he would stand up for a period of time equivalent to reciting forty verses.

It was narrated that Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah used to recite sitting, and when he wanted to bow he would stand up for as long as it takes a person to recite forty verses".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully recite the Quran with mindfulness and reverence; strive towards memorizing at least 40 verses from the Holy Qur’an; stand up during prayer instead of sitting down.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is important to recite the Quran with respect and reverence. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to recite while sitting, but when it was time for him to bow in prayer he would stand up for as long as it takes a person to recite forty verses. This shows us that we should take our time when reciting the holy book of Allah SWT and not rush through it. We should also be mindful of our posture during recitation; standing is more respectful than sitting. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us all to strive towards memorizing at least forty verses from the Holy Qur’an so that we can use them in our daily prayers.
