The Best Prayer and Fasting After Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that the best prayer after obligatory prayers is night prayer and the best fasting after Ramadan is in Muharram.

It was narrated from Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah that: He heard Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman say: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'The best prayer after the obligatory (fard) prayers is prayer at night and the best fasting after the month of Ramadan is Al-Muharram'." Shu'bah bin Al-Hajjaj narrated it in Mursal form.
أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي وَحْشِيَّةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ أَفْضَلُ الصَّلاَةِ بَعْدَ الْفَرِيضَةِ قِيَامُ اللَّيْلِ وَأَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ الْمُحَرَّمُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ أَرْسَلَهُ شُعْبَةُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ

This hadith from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advises Muslims to perform extra prayers and fastings beyond what is required of them. He recommends that the best prayer after obligatory prayers is night prayer, also known as Tahajjud. Additionally, he suggests that the best fasting after Ramadan should be done in Muharram. These extra acts of worship are encouraged by Islam as they bring one closer to Allah SWT and help build a strong relationship with Him. It also teaches us to be mindful of our actions even when we have fulfilled our obligations so that we can strive for excellence in all aspects of life.
