The Fear Prayer During Battle

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offered the fear prayer during one of his battles, leading two groups in praying one rak'ah each and then they made up the second rak'ah.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah offered the fear prayer during one of his battles. One group stood with him and another group faced the enemy. He led those who were with him in praying one rak'ah, then they went away and the others came, and he led them in praying one rak'ah. Then each group made up one rak'ah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill religious obligations even in difficult situations; Make up missed prayers when possible; Respect religious practices even in times of war .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of offering a special prayer known as Salatul Khawf or fear prayer during battle. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that during one of his battles, the Prophet Muhammad led two groups in praying one rak’ah each and then they made up the second rak’ah. A rak’ah is a unit of Islamic prayer consisting of standing, bowing and prostrating twice while reciting verses from the Quran. Salatul Khawf is an abbreviated form of salat or Islamic ritual prayers which are usually performed five times a day but can be shortened to two when there is danger or fear present such as during battle. This hadith teaches us that even in difficult situations like war we should not forget our religious obligations and should strive to fulfill them despite any obstacles we may face. We should also remember that if we are unable to complete our prayers due to any reason, we can make them up later on when it becomes possible for us to do so.
