Sunan an-Nasai 1518 (Book 17, Hadith 15) #16129
Answered Prayers of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man asking the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to pray for rain, and the Prophet's prayer being answered. The man then returns and asks the Prophet to pray for no rain, which is also answered.

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that: A man entered the masjid when the Messenger of Allah was standing and delivering the Khutbah. He turned to face the Messenger of Allah standing and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, our wealth has been destroyed and the routes have been cut off. Pray to Allah (SWT) to send us rain'. The Messenger of Allah raised his hands then said: "O Allah, send us rain". Anas said: "By Allah, we had not seen even a wisp of a cloud in the sky and there were no houses or buildings between us and (the mountain of ) Sal'. Then a cloud like a shield appeared, and when it reached the middle of the sky it spread and it began to rain". Anas said: "By Allah, we did not see the sun for a week. Then a man entered through that door on the following Friday, when the Messenger of Allah was standing and delivering the Khutbah. He turned to face him standing and said: 'O Messenger of Allah , may Allah (SWT) send blessings upon you. Our wealth has been destroyed and the routes have been cut off. Pray to Allah (SWT) to withhold (the rain) from us'. The Messenger of Allah raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.; O Allah, on the hills and mountains, the bottoms of the valleys and where the trees grow'. Then it stopped raining and we went out walking in the sun". Sharik said: 'I asked Anas: 'Was he the same man?' He said: 'No'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask something from God with sincerity ; Be grateful towards God’s blessings ; Have faith in His power

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a man who asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to pray for rain in order to help their wealth and routes that were destroyed. The Messenger of Allah raised his hands and prayed for them. Soon after, a cloud like a shield appeared in the sky and it began raining heavily. A week later, another man entered through that door on Friday when the Messenger was delivering his sermon again. He asked him to pray for no rain as their wealth was destroyed again due to too much rainfall. Again, he raised his hands and prayed for them saying “O Allah around us not on us; O Allah on hills mountains bottoms of valleys where trees grow” After this prayer it stopped raining immediately and they were able to go out walking in sunshine again. This hadith teaches us that if we ask something from God with sincerity then He will answer our prayers even if it seems impossible at first glance because nothing is impossible with Him! It also teaches us that we should always be grateful towards God’s blessings no matter how small or big they are because He can take them away just as quickly as He gave them!
