The Importance of Saying Tashahhud Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of saying the tashahhud prayer and how it should be said.

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: "Before the tashahhud was enjoined, when we prayed we used to say: 'Peace (As-Salam) be upon Allah (SWT), pace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il'. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Do not say this, for indeed Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, is As-Salam. Rather say: "At-tahiyyatu lillahi wasalawatu wat-tayibaat, as-salamu 'alaika ayah-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu 'alaina a 'ala ibad illahis-salihin, ashadu an la ilaha ill Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu. (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger)"

QUICK LESSONS:
Recite tashahhud in prayers with humility & respect .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of saying a special prayer called tashahhud. It was narrated by Ibn Mas'ud that before this prayer was enjoined, people used to say "Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Jibril, peace be upon Mika'il". However, the Messenger of Allah instructed them not to say this as Allah is As-Salam and instead they should recite a special prayer which includes salutations to Allah and His Prophet Muhammad. This prayer includes compliments for Allah, prayers for His mercy and blessings as well as salutations for all righteous slaves of Allah. It also includes bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Him and bearing witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. Thus, this hadith teaches us about the importance of reciting tashahhud in our prayers as it contains many important values such as humility towards God Almighty, respect for His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , recognition of our servitude towards Him and acknowledgement that He alone deserves worship.
