Sahih al-Bukhari 1635 (Book 25, Hadith 118) #1569
Doing Good Deeds and Helping Others

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged people to do good deeds and showed his willingness to help them.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Messenger came to the drinking place and asked for water. Al-Abbas said, "O Fadl! Go to your mother and bring water from her for Allah's Messenger ". Allah's Messenger said, "Give me water to drink". Al-Abbas said, "O Allah's Messenger ! The people put their hands in it". Allah's Messenger again said, 'Give me water to drink. So, he drank from that water and then went to the Zamzam (well) and there the people were offering water to the others and working at it (drawing water from the well). The Prophet then said to them, "Carry on! You are doing a good deed". Then he said, "Were I not afraid that other people would compete with you (in drawing water from Zamzam), I would certainly take the rope and put it over this (ie his shoulder) (to draw water)". On saying that the Prophet pointed to his shoulder.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be willing to help others in whatever way you can; strive for doing good deeds; encourage others towards doing good deeds; show appreciation for those who are already doing so.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's encouragement of doing good deeds and helping others. It is narrated that when the Prophet was offered water from a drinking place, he asked for it even though it was not clean. He then went to Zamzam well where people were offering water to each other, and he praised them for their good deed. He also expressed his willingness to help by saying that if he wasn't afraid of competing with them, he would have taken the rope himself and put it over his shoulder in order to draw water from the well. This hadith teaches us that we should always be willing to help others in whatever way we can, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. We should also strive to do good deeds as much as possible, as this will bring us closer to Allah's pleasure.
