Sunan an-Nasai 958 (Book 11, Hadith 83) #15566
Refusing to Prostrate Despite Hearing the Quran

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited a chapter of the Quran and prostrated, but Al-Muttalib, who had not yet accepted Islam, refused to do so.

It was narrated from Ja'far bin Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah that: His father said: "The Messenger of Allah recited Surat An-Najm in Makkah and prostrated, and those who were with him prostrated. I raised my head and refused to prostrate". At that time Al-Muttalib had not yet accepted Islam.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show respect for religion and beliefs of others; be aware of one's actions; show kindness towards others regardless of their beliefs or practices.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about an incident that occurred when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was reciting a chapter of the Quran in Makkah. When he prostrated after finishing his recitation, those around him also prostrated. However, Al-Muttalib refused to do so as he had not yet accepted Islam at that time. This story teaches us that even if we are not believers ourselves or have not accepted Islam yet we should still show respect for it by listening and respecting its teachings. We should also be aware of our actions and how they may affect others around us; even if we don’t agree with something or someone else’s beliefs or practices we should still show them respect and kindness.
