Supplicating for Forgiveness of Sins in Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) pausing briefly in prayer and reciting a supplication to ask Allah for forgiveness of sins.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "When the Messenger of Allah started to pray he would pause briefly. I said: 'May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah, what do you say when you pause briefly between the takbir and recitation?' He said: 'I say: Allahuma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya kama ba'adta bayna al-mashriqi wal-maghrib; Allahumma naqqini min khatayaya kama yunaqqa ath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas; Allahumma ighsilni min khatayaya bil ma'i wa ath-thalji wal-barad. (O Allah, put a great distance between me and my sins, as great as the distance You have made between the East and the West; O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed from filth; O Allah, wash away my sins with water and snow and hail)'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of asking Allah for forgiveness during prayer. It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that when the Prophet Muhammad started to pray, he would pause briefly and recite a supplication asking Allah to put a great distance between him and his sins, cleanse him from his sins as white garments are cleansed from filth, and wash away his sins with water, snow, and hail. This teaches us that we should take time out during our prayers to ask Allah for forgiveness of our sins. We should also be mindful of our actions so that we can avoid committing any more wrongdoings. Additionally, this hadith shows us how important it is to make du’a or supplications during prayer as it is an opportunity for us to communicate with Allah directly.
