Sahih al-Bukhari 1592 (Book 25, Hadith 78) #1529
Fasting on 'Ashura

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory, people used to fast on the tenth day of Muharram and the Ka'ba was covered with a cover. When Allah made fasting in Ramadan compulsory, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that whoever wishes to fast on 'Ashura can do so and whoever wishes to leave it can do so.

Narrated 'Aisha: The people used to fast on 'Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Ka'ba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Allah's Messenger said, "Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of 'Ashura') may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so".

Fast if you wish during Ashura day

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory, people used to fast on the tenth day of Muharram and the Ka'ba was covered with a cover. When Allah made fasting in Ramadan compulsory, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that whoever wishes to fast on 'Ashura can do so and whoever wishes to leave it can do so. This hadith teaches us about religious freedom as well as respect for other religions. It also shows us how important it is for Muslims to follow Islamic teachings but also be respectful towards other religions and their practices. We should not force our beliefs onto others or try to impose our own views upon them; rather we should strive for mutual understanding between different faiths and cultures.
