Sahih al-Bukhari 1559 (Book 25, Hadith 45) #1496
Completing Hajj & Umra

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) sent Abu Musa to some people in Yemen and when he returned, the Prophet asked him about his intention for assuming Ihram. He then ordered him to perform Tawaf round the Ka'ba and between Safa and Marwa and then to finish his Ihram.

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet sent me to some people in Yemen and when I returned, I found him at Al-Batha. He asked me, "With what intention have you assumed Ihram (ie for Hajj or for Umra or for both?") I replied, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of the Prophet". He asked, "Have you a Hadi with you?" I replied in the negative. He ordered me to perform Tawaf round the Ka'ba and between Safa and Marwa and then to finish my Ihram. I did so and went to a woman from my tribe who combed my hair or washed my head. Then, when 'Umar came (ie became Caliph) he said, "If we follow Allah's Book, it orders us to complete Hajj and Umra; as Allah says: "Perform the Hajj and Umra for Allah". (2:196). And if we follow the tradition of the Prophet who did not finish his Ihram till he sacrificed his Hadi".

Follow Allah's book; Perform tawaf; Finish ihram after certain rituals; Sacrifice an animal during hajj pilgrimage .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about completing Hajj and Umra, two of the five pillars of Islam. It was narrated by Abu Musa who was sent by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on a mission to Yemen. When he returned, the Prophet asked him what his intention was for assuming Ihram which is a state of purity that one must enter before performing either Hajj or Umra. The Prophet then ordered him to perform Tawaf around the Ka'ba which is a ritualistic circumambulation seven times counterclockwise around it, as well as between Safa and Marwa which are two hills located near Mecca. After this, he could finish his Ihram after going through certain rituals such as combing or washing one's hair with water from Zamzam well located near Mecca. Later on 'Umar became Caliph and said that if we follow Allah's Book it orders us to complete both Hajj and Umra but if we follow tradition of the prophet ﷺ who did not finish his ihram till he sacrificed his Hadi which refers to an animal sacrifice done at Mina during hajj pilgrimage .
