Sunan an-Nasai 127 (Book 1, Hadith 128) #14734
Wiping Over Khuffs When Travelling

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's instructions to his followers regarding wiping over their Khuffs (leather socks) when travelling, and not taking them off for three nights in the event of defecating, urinating or sleeping.

It was narrated that Zirr said: "I asked Safwan bin 'Assal about wiping over the Khuffs, and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to tell us, when we were travelling, to wipe over our Khuffs and not take them off for three nights in the event of defecating, urinating or sleeping; only in the case of Janabah'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings even when traveling .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's instructions to his followers regarding wiping over their Khuffs when travelling. The Prophet Muhammad taught that it was permissible to wipe over one's leather socks instead of taking them off for three nights in the event of defecating, urinating or sleeping. This instruction was given as a way to make it easier for Muslims who were travelling and did not have access to water or a place where they could take off their socks and perform wudu'. By allowing Muslims to wipe over their khuffs instead of having to take them off every time they needed to perform wudu', this hadith teaches us that Islam is a religion which takes into consideration practicality and convenience while still adhering strictly with its teachings.
