The Ritual Ablution of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: This hadith describes the Wudu' (ritual ablution) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

It was narrated that 'Abd Khair said: "I saw 'Ali call for a chair and he sat down, then he called for water in a vessel and washed his hands three times, then he rinsed his mouth and nose with one hand, three times. Then he washed his face three times, and his hands three times. Then he dipped his hand in the vessel and wiped his head, then he washed each foot three times. Then he said: 'Whoever would like to see how the Messenger of Allah performed Wudu', this is his Wudu''."
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ - قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ عُرْفُطَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا دَعَا بِكُرْسِيٍّ فَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فِي تَوْرٍ فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ بِكَفٍّ وَاحِدٍ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَيَدَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ غَمَسَ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ فَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلاَثًا ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَهَذَا وَضُوؤُهُ

This hadith narrates how the Prophet Muhammad performed his ritual ablution or Wudu'. It is narrated by 'Abd Khair who saw that the Prophet called for a chair and sat down. He then called for water in a vessel and washed his hands three times. After that he rinsed his mouth and nose with one hand three times. Then he washed his face three times and hands again three times. He then dipped his hand in the vessel and wiped his head before washing each foot three times. Through this hadith we learn about the importance of performing ritual ablutions as prescribed by Islam before engaging in any religious activity such as prayer or reciting Quran etc., which is an essential part of Islamic faith.
