Sahih Muslim 3026 (Book 56, Hadith 27) #14606
The Broader Meaning of Piety

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that piety is not just about entering one's house from behind, but rather it is a much broader concept.

Bara' reported: When the Ansar performed the Pilgrimage, they did not enter their houses but from behind. A person from the Ansar came and he began to enter from his door but it was said to him (why he was doing something in contravention to the common practice of coming to the houses from behind). Then this verse was revealed". Piety is not that you come to the doors from behind" (ii. 189).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the concept of taqwa, or piety. It tells us that taqwa is not just about coming to one's house from behind, as was the practice of the Ansar when they performed their pilgrimage. Rather, it is a much broader concept which encompasses many aspects of life and faith. The verse mentioned in this hadith further clarifies this point by saying that "piety is not that you come to the doors from behind". In other words, there are many other ways to demonstrate piety and live according to God's will.
