Sahih Muslim 3025 (Book 56, Hadith 26) #14605
The Importance of Salutations

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of extending salutations to those who greet us, even if they are not Muslims.

Ibn Abbas reported that some Muslims met a person with a small flock of sheep. He said: As-Salam-o-'Alaikum. They caught hold of him and killed him and took possession of his flock. Then this verse was revealed:" He who meets you and extends you salutations, don't say: You are not a Muslim" (iv. 94). Ibn 'Abbas, however, recited the word as-Salam instead of" as-Salam".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of extending salutations to those who greet us, even if they are not Muslims. It was narrated by Ibn Abbas that some Muslims met a person with a small flock of sheep and he greeted them with “As-salam-o-'Alaikum”. Instead of responding in kind, they killed him and took possession of his flock. In response to this incident, Allah revealed the verse “He who meets you and extends you salutations, don't say: You are not a Muslim”(iv. 94). This verse teaches us that we should always respond positively when someone greets us regardless of their faith or beliefs as it is an act of respect and kindness towards them. We should also remember that Allah loves those who show kindness towards others and will reward them for it in the hereafter.
