Sahih Muslim 3021a (Book 56, Hadith 15) #14594
Retaining a Wife and Taking Another

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the context of a Quranic verse which states that if a woman fears ill-treatment from her husband, he is allowed to retain her as his wife and take another one.

'A'isha said in connection with the verse: " And if a woman has reason to fear ill-treatment from her husband or that he might turn away from her" (iv. 128) that it was revealed in case of a woman who had long association with a person (as his wife) and now he intends to divorce her and she says: Do not divorce me, but retain me (as wife in your house) and you are permitted to live with another wife. It is in this context that this verse was revealed.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the context of a Quranic verse which states that if a woman fears ill-treatment from her husband, he is allowed to retain her as his wife and take another one. The Prophet's wife A'isha narrated this hadith in connection with the verse found in Surah An-Nisa 4:128 . This verse was revealed in case of a woman who had long association with someone as his wife but now he intends to divorce her. In such cases, it is permissible for him to keep the first wife and marry another one at the same time. The main idea behind this teaching is that men should not mistreat their wives or turn away from them without any valid reason. It also teaches us about justice and fairness towards women even when they are divorced or separated from their husbands.
